Not All Power Is Created Equal
For decades, diesel generators have been the go-to solution for off-grid and backup power. But the true cost of diesel extends far beyond the fuel bill. Every litre of diesel burned releases around 2.68kg of CO₂, along with nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter (PM), air pollutants linked to asthma, cancer, cardiovascular disease, and cognitive decline. In fact, diesel generators can emit up to 40 times more NOx than modern road vehicles.
Even alternatives like HVO (hydrotreated vegetable oil), often promoted as “clean diesel,” still produce NOx and particulates, failing to address the significant public health impacts of combustion-based power.

Why HPUs Outperform Battery-Only Systems in High-Demand Scenarios
While battery power is a great solution for short-duration or low-load applications, it falls short in high-demand, multi-day, or off-grid use cases like powering tower cranes, EV charging, or broadcast units. Standalone batteries require frequent recharging, often from the grid elsewhere, and typically can’t meet sustained load demands without excessive sizing or downtime.
GeoPura’s Hydrogen Power Units can be used to recharge on-site battery systems, extending runtime, reducing load on the grid, and enabling fully distributed, resilient energy solutions. Rather than choosing between batteries and hydrogen, you can combine them – with the HPU providing consistent power and the battery managing peaks and critical backup.
Why HPUs Are Better Than Hybrid Combustion Generators
Many Stage V hybrid generators combine batteries with diesel or HVO combustion to meet emissions limits. But this approach still burns fuel, emits pollutants, and requires regular maintenance.
GeoPura’s HPU replaces the combustion engine with a fuel cell powered by green hydrogen. It charges its onboard battery without emissions, offering a truly clean hybrid solution – silent, self-charging, and safe.
Why HVO Is Not the Answer
HVO (hydrotreated vegetable oil) is often marketed as a “cleaner” drop-in replacement for diesel, but in reality, it’s far from zero-emission. While it may reduce net CO₂ emissions under certain supply conditions, HVO still produces NOx and particulates, contributing to poor air quality and associated health risks.
In addition:
- Air pollution impacts remain – HVO still emits harmful byproducts that affect respiratory and cardiovascular health.
- Sustainability is questionable – Feedstocks like used cooking oil and palm oil can’t scale to meet growing energy needs without environmental trade-offs.
- It locks in combustion infrastructure – Investing in HVO doesn’t move your business away from outdated generator technology or toward long-term net-zero targets.
In contrast, hydrogen fuel cells eliminate all combustion – producing only water and heat, making them the truly clean, future-proof option.
