As the UK’s first UN Accelerator City for Climate Action, Liverpool is leading the way in reshaping how live music, film, and TV productions approach sustainability. At Expedition One, hosted in Liverpool, we saw bold ideas and actionable steps toward decarbonising the cultural and creative industries, marking the start of a transformative year ahead.

Driving Decarbonisation in Music, Film, and TV

Liverpool’s Accelerator City initiative will support eight innovative pilot projects throughout 2025, targeting reduced carbon emissions across the cultural and creative sectors. This includes sustainable production trials, developing templates for eco-friendly music festivals, and embedding climate-conscious targets into event land-use agreements. A global first for any local authority.

The King’s Sustainable Markets Initiative (SMI) was announced as a strategic partner, bringing critical private sector backing. Partnering with Ecotricity, Liverpool will pioneer a ‘plug-and-play’ pillar system for powering major events and filming locations. These innovations are designed to scale, setting new sustainability benchmarks for cities worldwide.

GeoPura’s Role: Powering a Sustainable Future

As a supporting sponsor of Expedition One, GeoPura played an active role in shaping the conversation about cleaner energy solutions. Our Hydrogen Power Units (HPUs) deliver zero-emission power for off grid, back up and supplementary power applications, helping industries transition from fossil fuel energy sources.

Through our clean hydrogen technology, we aim to support the creative industries’ transition toward carbon-free energy, eliminating reliance on diesel generators at major events and production sites. This builds on our work to date with industry leaders such as the BBC, powering the live production and broadcast of the Watches and work with leading streaming services to power series production sustainably, and aligns directly with Liverpool’s ambitious sustainability goals.

Highlights from the Labs at Expedition One

The Labs at Expedition One brought together industry leaders, sustainability advocates, and creative professionals including European Space Agency, Liverpool City Council, A Greener Future, Picture Zero, Department for Transport, Equity Green Rider, Tyndall Centre, BAFTA Albert, ITV Studios, Quay Street Productions and Sister to collaborate on solutions for reducing environmental impact in cultural events. We were inspired by sessions that emphasised the power of cross-sector partnerships, innovative energy models, and creative storytelling as a force for change.

One standout session featured Massive Attack’s Act 1.5 initiative, where founding band member Robert Del Naja and project partners shared their pioneering low-carbon touring roadmap. They discussed reducing tour emissions through better energy sourcing, improved audience travel logistics, and transparent sustainability communication. A powerful example of industry-led climate action.

What’s Next for Liverpool’s Climate Action Journey?

The year ahead promises trailblazing progress as Liverpool pilots its sustainability projects. These experiments will be refined, scaled, and tested throughout 2025, culminating in Expedition Two in November 2025, where results will be shared with the global community.

As the industry accelerates toward a carbon-free future, GeoPura is proud to power this movement through hydrogen-based solutions, helping creative industries redefine sustainability.
