Extreme H, the world’s first off-road hydrogen racing series, will launch its inaugural FIA World Cup season in 2025. To integrate hydrogen into motorsport safely and reliably, the championship has partnered with GeoPura and Siemens to design and validate every part of its hydrogen ecosystem.

GeoPura: leading on hydrogen safety
GeoPura’s role goes far beyond supplying hydrogen fuel cell generators. The team has acted as hydrogen safety advisors for the Extreme H programme, liaising directly with the FIA and regulators to ensure hydrogen systems meet the strictest motorsport and international standards.
Theo Elmer, Chief Technical Officer at GeoPura, explained:
“Hydrogen is safe if it’s correctly managed and maintained. Our job with Extreme H is to show regulators, teams and fans that it can be deployed reliably, even in one of the toughest sporting environments in the world.”
Key contributions include:
- Designing and validating full hydrogen safety processes covering car design, production, storage, transport and refuelling.
- Developing crash and leak scenarios, then working with Siemens’ digital twin technology to simulate and mitigate risks.
- Guiding FIA and local authorities through safety protocols and regulatory approvals.
- Demonstrating hydrogen’s reliability under the most challenging racing conditions.
A powerful partnership
While Siemens provides advanced simulation and control systems, GeoPura brings deep hydrogen expertise and real-world operational experience. Siemens’ Simcenter software enabled accurate digital modelling of hydrogen behaviour, giving the Extreme H team confidence that every safety measure was tested and validated before deployment. Together, we are creating a blueprint for safe hydrogen deployment that can be applied far beyond motorsport, from construction and energy to events and broadcasting.
As Alejandro Agag, Founder and CEO of Extreme E and Extreme H, noted:
“The move to hydrogen required rigorous attention to both perception and real safety. That’s why we needed partners like GeoPura and Siemens, who understand the technology inside out and can help us prove it to the world.”

Setting global standards
By proving that hydrogen can be integrated safely into motorsport, GeoPura is showing the world what’s possible. The Extreme H project is not just a racing story – it’s evidence that with the right expertise, hydrogen is both safe and reliable, even in the most demanding settings.
The hydrogen powered Pioneer 25 race car will soon take centre stage at the inaugural FIA Extreme H World Cup, with the first race scheduled in Qiddiya City, Saudi Arabia. This milestone event will demonstrate to a global audience how hydrogen can power motorsport sustainably, safely, and at the highest level of competition.
